AdSense: Stand out or blend in?
Every AdSense publisher has at one point or another been faced with the decision to make their ads stand out or blend into their website. I have always been a fan of blending my ads because it tends to look better, but lately I’ve been trying some other options and I have to say that I am starting to lean towards making my ads stand out more.
I think it’s a tricky thing to get your ads just right, but you’ll never find out if you never change them around and try new things. I have lately tried using some pastel type colors that don’t really look ugly, but also don’t blend in directly to my site.
After a few days of trying out the new colors I’ve already noticed a significant increase in click-through rates and revenue. It would seem that right now the ads that stand out are doing better than the ones that blend in. I also believe that there is a fine line when it comes to choosing your ad colors. I think it all depends on your type of traffic, and the way your site is laid out. Blending can (and does) work much better for some webmasters, while making ads stand out has also done very well for many people. Right now I’ve joined forces with the “standing out” crowd, but you never know how long this will last. I could change some things around in the next few weeks and find that switching back to blended ads works better again. It’s a constant game of experimenting but in the end if you don’t try different things you won’t ever change in a positive or negative direction. If you aren’t happy with your current click-through rates I suggest you play around with your ad placement and colors and keep track of your results.
