Web for profit, fun, or both?
When starting a new website a lot of webmasters will research a niche that will result in some decent money earned from ad sales and advertising in general. One thing I believe strongly is that you should never start a site about something that you do not have a passion for. If you are in it ONLY for the money then you will burn out much quicker than if you are having fun with what you are doing. For example, medical and lawyer related websites make a lot of money. Do I run any websites that cover such topics? Negative. Instead I have websites relating to topics that interest me. You don’t have to be 100% interested in the topic you are covering, but you should know enough that you can enjoy running your site on a day to day basis.
My forum network literally is the result of different interests that I have. My first forum was a videogame forum. Several years later I became interested in eBay and online auctioning and started a forum that covered making money on eBay through powerselling and everyday selling. Shortly later I began daytrading through TD Waterhouse (now TD Ameritrade) and started a forum around stock trading, investing, and of course making money in general. I soon realized that when I enjoyed working on the sites I had, that what I did on a day to day basis dod not feel like work. I’ve always been into technology and computers and shortly later I started a tech forum dealing with all things IT related.
I’ve launched more forums since then and have also started several blogs. None of my other blogs are updated daily but as you can see I enjoy talking about the things I post here at MoneyComplex.com. My advice to anybody starting up a new website is this. Do not focus on how much money there is to be made. Instead focus on something that you have a passion for and can see yourself getting excited about. Otherwise even if you do update daily your readers will soon realize that you are only in it for the money. If you don’t take time to enjoy what you do then you will be forced to take time to work on what you do.
